Charting a New Path

"We were also told 'That is all in the past. You should be concentrating on the present.' I became more and more aware that the past is never past ; it is the present for those who have survived those events and for their relatives in this country." If we do not learn from the lessons of past events , we will not make a proper contribution to improving the present.

Those were very prophetic words spoken in the Commons by the late Co-chair of the Health Select committee. In fact they have given us direction and guidance in how are new course shoud be charted. "If we do not learn from the lessons of past events." No truer words were ever spoken. We could add to that another quote "fool us once its your fault ,fool us twice its our fault"
Since attending the hearings in 1998 and the other meetings we attended we really believed that both Governments would honor their promises. We then expected that action would be taken to engage the control agencies in the process even if it required goverment action to enforce. What wishful thinking. During the ensuing months and years and all the fruitless efforts we came to realize that deceit and deception at all levels was still in full use.

That is why we have decided that a whole new approach is require always keeping in mind "the lessons of the past" we have been delayed in implementing this new approah by the polictial situation in Canada particularly [i.e. minority governments]. We were still trying but were going no where. The politicians were to busy trying to survive. Trying to survive is something that we and the Home Children community are familiar with.

There are millions of us in Canada and if there is one things politicians fear especially in times of instability of minority governments is losing the votes of major groups. So far Canadian politicians havent' realized the voting power of the Home Children community and that there are over 3 million voters in Canada with perhaps 2 million voters in the volatile Southern Ontario alone.
This represents more than enough voters to affect the outcome of a federal election. The next election is not that far in the future.

The first step must be to try and get each of the four political parties to recognize the problems facing our families. But first we have to educate them because most when we contact them claim they have never heard of the Home Children and their problems.
That not is to say it will be easy but we have also learned from the actions of groups who have gone before and who have managed to get help, programs and solutions. There may be many steps before satisfactory solutions are found but as "every long journey starts with the first step."

The U.K. situation is simmilar as there will soon be a new leader of the Labor party and probably soon after that a new election.
Our goal is to make the problems of the Home Children community an election issue in both countries. There are no definite numbers on the number of living relatives in the U.K but if their are 4 million family members in Canada and it has been estimated that the number of extended family in the U.K. could be 3 times the Canadian number or over twelve million Britains. That represents over twenty percent of the population a number like that would be a formidable asset.
We have had hundreds of discussions and now a plan is in place by the time you read this it will be underway. We will be seeking help and advice from everyone not just the Home Children community. We know from talking to thousands of Canadians and Britains how shocked and angered they are when they learn of the treatment of the Canadian diaspora.

The Chairman of the Health Select Committee David Hinchliffe stated in the Commons debate."Some are still anxious to avoid their responsibility and to obstruct the right of former migrants to know the truth about themselves." We still don't know the truth about thousands and thousands of the children sent to Canada but we do now know the truth about David Hinchliffe, Tony Blair and the Labor Party. They should look at themselves in the mirror and recognise those who LEAD THE WAY IN OBSTRUCTING THE RIGHTS OF OTHERS.

"THESE PEOPLE ARE REMARKABLE BECAUSE THEIR MAIN PREOCCUPATION IS NOT TO SEEK COMPENSATION - AND GOODNESS KNOWS THEY HAVE AN OVERWHELMING CASE - BUT TO ALLOW THOSE WHO WERE TAKEN FROM THIS COUNTRY TO BE REUNITED WITH THEIR FAMILIES ,TO HAVE SOME PEACE AND TO UNDERSTAND THE CIRCUMSTANCES IN WHICH THEY LEFT BRITAIN TO GO TO A WORLD OF ABUSE'"  {Jonathan Shaw   M.P.
